When it comes to sucking search engine traffic out of the search engines and other websites, nothing beats original content. You are going to have to produce content for your blog, then take that same content and spread it out over the internet so it grows virally. I’m going to show you how to do this.

Now I know some of you are thinking… “But I can’t write”. Well I disagree. If you can talk, then you can write. Remember, your goal is not to write the next best seller, it’s just to get content onto your website that’s loaded with keywords that people on Google or other search engines are searching for. Once you crank out a few blog postings, it gets easier and easier.

Where to Get Ideas…

If you need help getting started, just go to Google Blog Search (blogsearch.google.com/), which is Google’s search engines for blogs, and type in the keyword you are looking to target. This will pull up any blogs related to your niche. Once you have the results simply visit some of these other blogs in order to get some ideas for topics that you can write about.

Also, try going to article directory sites and see what others have written. For instance you could go to EzineArticles.com or GoArticles.com and type in one of the keywords you are trying to target and you will find hundreds if not thousands of articles previously written by other authors.

The one thing you don’t want to do is copy articles or blog posts word for word; that’s plagiarism. Plus the content is already out there, so more than likely the site where it originated from will beat you every time for search engine traffic and authority. A good strategy would be to take an article you find on your niche and re-write it with a focus on your target market, product or service. The one exception to the “copy-and-paste” rule is that you can copy the articles from either EzineArticles.com or GoArticles.com as long as you leave the author’s credit in-tact. While this is not as good as original content, some content will beat out no content on your blog every time.

Writing Headlines…

Headlines for your blog posts are important. It’s what will get web surfers to click and visit your blog. Coming up with ideas for headlines for your blog posts can be easy once you’ve done it a few times. One trick you might want to try is to look at the covers of magazines like business opportunity magazines and swipe ideas from their headlines.

For instance, from the cover of a recent Entrepreneur Magazine I could write a blog post then simply add a word or two to the magazine’s headlines to create my own headlines like:

• “Five Secrets to Making Money Online Now!”
• “Start Your Home Based Business the Smart Way”.

You can even use the words “Homebased” or “Home-based” instead of “Home Based” to catch the people that break the name up when typing it into Google’s search box.

Also, you can use the words “MLM” or “Network Marketing” to get traffic from people searching for MLM opportunities. By doing this you could take the same headlines shown above and turn them into something like:

• “Five Secrets to Making Money Online with an MLM Now!”
• “Start Your Network Marketing Business the Smart Way”.

Part of what you are trying to do is put key search terms that people are searching for into your headlines.

The writer’s of headlines for Cosmopolitan Magazine are some of the highest paid writers in the world. This is because the headlines on the cover, not the content inside, is what makes their magazines fly off the shelves. So doesn’t it makes sense to swipe good copy from the world’s best headline writers?

If you look at a cover of Cosmo, it always follows a formula. The upper left hand of the magazine (the first headline) is always about sex. Why? Because sex sells; which is why the majority of the headlines for the magazine are about sex. From a recent edition of the magazine you could come up with headlines like these:

• “Taboo Money! The Dirty Sexy Little Secret that Could Make You Rich”
• “Advice from network marketing entrepreneurs you’d be crazy not to take”
• “Don’t Get Caught Naked Trying to Start Your Online Business with out Having These Tips”.

All three of those headlines are modified versions from just one Cosmopolitan Magazine cover.

Outsourcing your writing:

If you really don’t want to write and have a few extra dollars, you can always outsource your writing. The easiest way is to find 5 to 10 articles that you want re-written then place a post on Rentacoder.com, Elance.com or Project4Hire.com asking people to bid on the job.

Say that you just want 10 articles, an average of 300 words per article, re-written to be unique content. Be sure to ask anyone bidding to submit samples of their writing. You can even request that the writer post them onto your blog for you if you want to avoid that task. (You will have to set them up with a non-admin password that only allows them to post). You will get lots of replies, and lots of bid offers. You should be able to find someone that can crank these out for under $5 per article. When you accept a bid, you will then place the payment into the site’s escrow account. When the writer has finished writing the articles and has submitted them to you, then you release the funds from escrow.

So you hate to type…

There are several options for people that hate to type. We’ve already discussed outsourcing your writing, but there are also other options if you wish to create your own content and get your ideas, in your own words, onto your blog without having to type.

You can always get a USB microphone for your computer and use a software package like Dragon Naturally Speaking. Available at: nuance.com/naturallyspeaking. Dragon Naturally Speaking will turn your talking into text. That way you can simply say what you want, then cut and paste the text into a blog post.

Another option is to record what you want, then have it transcribed and emailed back to you as text. There are many services that will do this for you like eTranscriptionist.com. Also (as mentioned above) you can always outsource the transcribing using sites such as Rentacoder.com, Elance.com or Project4Hire.com. You can even ask for someone that can edit your writing for grammatical errors or that can do some “heavy” editing and re-write portions if you feel you need it.

Getting Help With Grammar…

If you use Microsoft Word, then you will get minor help with grammatical and spelling errors. But if you really want to polish up the grammar with your articles and blog posts, then consider the grammar correcting software made by White Smoke. You can even use their online version for free at: whitesmoke.com/free-online-checker/.

However, don’t get too caught up with grammar. If you get too clinical and perfect, then you will lose the one thing that makes your writing look like it came from a real person. People want to do business with real people. So don’t worry too much about a few misspelled words or grammatical errors.

For Those On a Budget…

If you don’t own Microsoft Word to write with, there is a no-cost option called “Open Office”. It’s an open source Microsoft Office clone software package and can be downloaded for free at: Openoffice.org

In Conclusion…

When you write a blog post you will be creating content that can be used over and over, not just in your blog. Infact in an upcoming article I will cover how to use content you create again and again to bring in traffic.

Remember, it’s text on web pages that bring in search engine traffic. Search engines can’t see graphics, pictures, or see into videos. So fill your articles with words and phrases that you think people will be searching for. The more blog posts you make, the more chances you will have to catch traffic from search engines. Here’s why more is better – You never know what combination of words Google will fall in love with. Plus, Google loves blogs that update frequently.

Gossip writing is a rarely discussed category for freelance writers. Sure, we all aspire to be published in The New Yorker and gossip writing is not taught in journalism schools. Almost everyone gossips. In fact, more people gossip now than ever before. Their medium is the blog, particularly Facebook and other social networking sites that have replaced the old-fashioned diary with personal gossip. Most of us gossip about people we know.

In the media, gossip is about celebrities. Hundreds of “commercial blogs” are devoted to celebrity gossip, notably Deadline Hollywood Daily, The Dirty, Gawker, Hollywood Life, Just Jared, Perez Hilton, PopSugar, TMZ and many more! Some of these blogs pay for tips and use freelance writers and photographers, but it’s the magazine category that provides the greatest opportunity for freelancers.

The top-circulation celebrity news magazines are People, Us Weekly, Star and Entertainment Weekly. People, with a circulation of over 3.5 million, doesn’t call itself a gossip magazine, but it competes with the others for exclusives about celebrities. Celebrity fashions are covered by In Touch Weekly, Life & Style Weekly (both published by Bauer, a German company), People StyleWatch and InStyle (both published by Time, Inc.) and all of the big-circulation monthly women’s, men’s and teen magazines. Advertising declines in recent years have resulted in staff reductions at most magazines. Editors increasingly turn to freelancers, including those at magazines that formerly were almost totally staff written.

Celebrities are not just in the entertainment industries. Famous people include VIPs in government, sports, food, real estate, business, media and other fields. All of these fields are superbly covered in Vanity Fair, a prestigious monthly published by Condé Nast that works with many of America’s renowned freelance writers. You may not be ready for Vanity Fair but you should read it for insights about celebrity coverage. Cosmopolitan, the top-selling newsstand magazine, is a gossiper’s paradise, as are New York and other regional magazines, as well as Interview and other small-circulation magazines.

Perhaps your first thought about a gossip magazine is one of the supermarket tabloids. The National Enquirer pioneered in the placement of magazines in racks at checkout counters. Today, American Media, Inc. owns Star (its top circulation magazine), the National Enquirer and Globe. You definitely should not be embarrassed about writing for these weekly magazines. The National Enquirer had accurate scoops about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards and Tiger Woods long before other media, and mainstream journalists give it appropriate credit.

Now that you’re convinced of the importance of gossip magazines, here’s how you can get started. It’s not likely that Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney or Brad Pitt will grant an interview to you, even if you’re able to get the e-mail, phone or Twitter address. Here are five other interview possibilities.

1. A celebrity may be in your city promoting a book, touring a show, working in the production of a movie or TV show, vacationing or visiting friends and family. You don’t have to live in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or Miami to be a celebrity reporter. Not all celebrities live in major cities. Many A-listers have primary or secondary homes in small towns, as well as such big cities as Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco. Chances are you know that Sundance, Utah, is the home of a global celebrity.

2. It’s relatively easy to interview a relative, friend, former classmate, former boyfriend (or girlfriend), teacher or someone associated with a celebrity. Google and Wikipedia can provide biographical details. A “remembrance story” is always in demand.

2. Find a retailer, restaurant, fashion designer, architect or anyone who has a celebrity as a customer. You may find this source to be appreciative of the publicity and you can get great anecdotes about the buying, dining and entertainment habits of a celebrity.

3. Become a gossip columnist. Maybe not in the New York Post (home of Page Six and Cindy Adams) but a good place to start is a weekly newspaper in your area. Contact local theaters, restaurants, hotels, charities and their public relations representatives, and you soon will be receiving more than enough press releases to fill a weekly column. You will be invited to social events so that your column can include your personal comments and descriptions of apparel worn by local socialites. As you develop friendships with local celebrities, keep in mind that they can lead you to national celebrities. Also, when a national celebrity comes to your town, your columnist credential puts you in the press corps.

4. Here’s an assignment for you. Find a person or group in your community who you can transform from an unknown to a celebrity. Examples: a translator of a foreign best-seller, winner of an offbeat contest (best pies, most hot dogs, spelling bee winner), American Idol loser, an octogenarian, triplets (also quadruplets and quintuplets, but stay away from the Octomom), tallest, fastest (but not thinnest)… well, you get the idea!

As with any magazine article, you must be familiar with the writing style of the publication. The weekly celebrity newsmagazines and supermarket tabloids are read mostly by women. College-educated upscale women read People and the supermarket tabloids have lower demographics. Like the tabloid newspapers, the gossip magazines enjoy alliteration, colorful metaphors, puns and other humor, abbreviations, slang and coined words (usually combining parts of two words). Most important, make sure that all your information and quotes are accurate! You may want to attach to your article the names of verified sources. The magazine probably will add sensational headlines and subheads, but that’s not your job.

During the last three years, I have been writing a book about gossip. Interviews of over 200 psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, historians and media people in the U.S. and around the world have increased my appreciation of the gossip media. I have learned that gossip, as defined by social scientists, is oral or written information about another person that usually is true or has a strong basis in fact, and often is judgmental. A rumor, on the other hand, usually is false and unverified.

I have been doing Yellow Page design for the past 15 years. I have been fully submerged in the medium. Even as I sit here writing this article I have various Yellow Page directories from all over the US stacked on my desk.

It’s an art form, I tell you. Few comprehend its power. Few understand the subtle blend of art and science that combines to create the successful Yellow Page ad design. It takes a true connoisseur to understand the underlying psychology of a masterfully crafted Yellow Pages ad design.

Now I know what your thinking. This guy is off his rocker. Oh, but I disagree. I intend to plainly illustrate a very disheartening trend developing in our local neighborhood Yellow Pages. I call this trend–the rise of the dreaded ‘magazine style’ Yellow Pages ad.

Now I love magazines too. I like to leaf through my Forbes Magazine as I leisurely sit by the pool. I occasionally glance at the pages of Elle when my wife leaves it lying around. I’ve even been known to flip through the pages of Wired when I’m ready for the latest rant on how Star Wars has changed the world. But when I turn to my local Yellow Pages the last thing I’m ready to face is the pages of Cosmopolitan.

With the recent rise of readily available, cheaply commissionable, Yellow Page ad design services it would seem our Yellow Pages are turning into a ‘magazine style’ nightmare.

Now I’m not saying your ad should be as ugly as your Yellow Pages advertising sales rep wants to make it, but if your Yellow Page ad is turning into an Ansel Adams exhibition, and your selling air conditioners there is something wrong here. I know, I said Yellow Page ad design is an art, but what I meant by art was the kind of Yellow Page ad that ultimately leads to someone buying something from you.

It’s like Trump calls it–the art of the deal. That’s the kind of art you are looking for in your Yellow Pages advertising. It’s the art of getting peoples attention, and not losing it a half second later when they can’t figure out what it is your selling. I mean, the heading says ‘Plumbing’ but with all these baby pictures it looks more like a Daycare heading. Which one of these guys is a plumber?

These clever ads may be all the rage as I’m sipping my cocktail by the swimming pool, but when I’m looking for a reason I should buy from you instead of your competitor, trying to baffle me with a clever picture that makes me think some Yellow Page flunky lost his job when he mistakenly pasted a Daycare ad in Plumbing, is not the way to do it. Yeah, you got my attention. Am I calling? Sure. I’m calling your competitor.

Nobody has the time to decipher your cute ‘magazine style’ Yellow Pages ad. Captivating your audience is important, making your Yellow Page ad design distinctive is paramount, but confusing people can make your Yellow Page advertising useless.

I have learned over the years to even steer clear of ‘magazine style’ layout for fear of lack-luster results. Many directories have phone company traps set up with 3 or 4 pages of these ‘magazine style’ Yellow Page ads for there own products and services. Yellow Page shoppers learn to tune them out quickly.

Stumble through 4 full-page full-color ‘magazine style’ Yellow Pages ads under ‘Publishing’ while you’re on your way to the ‘Printing’ heading and you quickly learn what not to look for. Phone company traps can be set up under Advertising, Communications, Publishing, Internet, Telecommunications–always just a few pages away from where your Yellow Page ad is going to call home.

While magazine ads can be very entertaining, who doesn’t like PacBell’s cross-eyed dog that is guaranteed to be under seven headings of any given PacBell directory, the important thing to remember is Yellow Page shoppers are not there to be entertained–they are there to buy. Hopefully from you!

So be warned, from the desk of a 15 year veteran in the Yellow Page ad design field, if you are expecting great results with that clever, not so clever, magazine style Yellow Page ad design you are running this year, you might find yourself sadly disappointed.

There are better ways to grab people’s attention with your Yellow Page advertising, AND get them to buy from you. Never sacrifice your company’s sales for magazine style Yellow Page advertising.

If you have but one minute, there’s “The Minute A Day Method To Perfect Shape”, from Jane Magazine and if you have no minutes, Women & Home Magazine shows you how to “Look 5 Years Younger Now”, Men’s Fitness provides “30 Ways To Look Great Right Now”, and Self Magazine authoritatively offers “The # 1 Way To Look Prettier Instantly.”

If time isn’t an issue but having a number of options is, I suggest “789 Great Health, Sex, Fitness & Nutrition Tips”, from Men’s Health, “546 Style Trends For You”, from Perfect Hair Magazine, “200 + New Looks For You”, from Seventeen, “42 Muscle Building Meals”, from Men’s Fitness, “25 Fat Burning Shortcuts”, from Exercise And Health, “9 Ways To Dine Out And Lose Weight”, from Allure, and “5 Sandwiches That Build Muscle”, from Muscle And Fitness.

To show how these articles have already altered my life, before I read “5 Sandwiches That Build Muscle”, I used to make sandwiches without any strategy whatsoever and built muscle by carrying my kitchen table to the park, eating my sandwich there and then hauling the table home again. All that time wasted and never knowing how little I knew about love.

Before reading “187 Things You Don’t Know About The Other Sex” in Esquire, “11 Sex Dreams You Need To Know About” in Cosmopolitan UK Edition, “8 Ways To Reignite Post Partum Passion” in Pregnancy Magazine, “7 Myths That Could End Your Marriage” in Psychology Today and “The 31 Sex & Love Thrills No Women Should Miss Plus 6 Bedroom “Musts” You Can Skip” in Glamour — you may wonder as I once did — if the Hubble Telescope is pointed in the right direction. Have no fear. They’ve explained everything there is to know and now that all women’s secrets have been revealed, I suggest all of us (that includes men and women!) focus on beautifying and organizing our homes.

If the inside of your house is a mess, I suggest you start with the outside. If there are no bodies of water on the property, you won’t want to miss “10 Reasons Why You Need A Pond” from Ponds USA. Now if all this self-help information appears overwhelming – relax – there are articles to restore serenity to your life such as “You Got Stress? 1,000 Time Savers, Mind Savers – Just For You.” from Redbook and Good Housekeeping’s “Moody? Turns out they’re a sucker for those lose weight while you sleep schemes.

Cosmopolitan magazine is one of the oldest magazines in the United States. It was first published in 1886 by Schicht & Field as a family magazine called The Cosmopolitan; this version of the magazine proved to be popular and reached a circulation of 25,000 by 1888.

In 1889, John Brisbane and E.D. Walker took over the magazine after Schlicht & Field went out of business. The pair then transformed The Cosmopolitan magazine into a literary magazine, which became a success. By 1892 the magazine had a circulation of about 75,000.

In 1905 William Randolph Hearst bought the magazine for $400,000 and brought in journalist Charles Edward Russell, who contributed a series of investigative articles. Other contributors included now renowned authors Sinclair Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Ida Tarbell and Upton Sinclair.

With a circulation of 1,700,000 in the 1930s, Cosmopolitan magazine had an advertising income of $5,000,000. In the 1940s it emphasized fiction and was subtitled “The Four-Book Magazine;” the first section had one novelette, six or eight short stories, two serials, six to eight articles and eight or nine special features, while the other three sections featured two novels and a digest of current non-fiction books. During World War II, sales peaked at $2,000,000.

In the 1950s the magazine cut back on fiction and circulation dropped to slightly more than a million in 1955. At this time magazines had to compete with and thus were overshadowed by the rise of paperbacks and television.

Cosmopolitan magazine’s circulation continued to decline for another decade until Helen Gurley Brown became chief editor in 1965 and remodeled the magazine as New Cosmopolitan magazine, which was renamed Cosmopolitan magazine in 1967. At this time, Cosmopolitan became a women’s magazine, focusing on young women and published articles that openly talked about relationships and sexual issues-a groundbreaking move.

Soon after Helen Gurley Brown’s arrival Cosmopolitan became the must-read for young single woman. According to Cosmo’s company history on the magazine’s website, Cosmo also began to serve as “an agent for social change, encouraging women everywhere to go after what they want whether it be in the boardroom or the bedroom.”

In 1999, Laurie Ouellette, PhD, wrote an article called “Inventing the Cosmo Girl,” which examined the cultural impact of the magazine in the ’60s and ’70s. “What made it so desirable is that it outlined an American dream for single, working women,” Laurie Ouellette said. “It provided them with a vision and detailed advice on how to live a better life – on their own terms.”

In more recent years, with the mass production of niche magazines like Lucky, InStyle and Marie Claire, to name a few more recently published magazines, Cosmopolitan’s cultural impact is less profound. Still, the magazine remains extremely popular; its content usually consists of articles like: “Cosmo’s Guide to Red Hot Sex,” “Cosmo Confessions: Hundreds of Absolutely Shameful, Scandalous and Sexy Real-Life Tales!” and “Turn on Your Man.”

Cosmopolitan has had some missteps. In a 1988 issue, Cosmopolitan ran a feature maintaining women had a low-risk of contracting the HIV virus, after research indicated otherwise. More recently, because its cover stories and headlines have become sexually explicit, Kroger, one of the U.S.’s largest grocery chains, currently covers up Cosmopolitan at checkout stands because of customer complaints.

Still, Cosmopolitan magazine has a place in modern popular culture, including being referenced in many movies like “Legally Blonde” and television shows like “The O.C,” “Will and Grace” and “Third Watch.”

Today, Cosmopolitan is published in 58 international editions in 34 languages and is distributed in more than 100 countries.
